password securityIn our last post we looked at some different options for saving and storing your passwords so you won’t forget them, but would still keep them secure. Today we’re going to look at what to do when you need something a little stronger.

When you need extra security

Two-factor authentication provides an additional layer of security to your password manager and can help protect you in the event that someone is able to crack your master password. Google Authenticator is compatible with most password managers and will send you a passcode by text to be entered with your password. Intuitive Password provides an alternative to Google Authenticator and is free.

RoboForm Everywhere and LastPass 3.0 Premium provide a unique twist on two factor authentication. While both can send you a passcode by text, they can also be set up to allow you to use your fingerprint in place of the passcode.

Low tech options for keeping your password safe

Of course, you can still go the old school route of protecting your passwords by simply writing them down and keeping the list stored in a physically secure place, such as a safe. You can also increase your vulnerability by using the same common word or string of numbers for your passwords.  Most security experts advise against these practices, and as our physical lives become increasingly entangled with the online digital world, these options are not very convenient or practical.

Since the number of cyberattacks seems to grow each day, and there is literally a password manager that will fit every budget, the best time to choose a password manager and begin using it is now, before your password is lost or stolen.
