strategic plan

Once the objectives have been identified it is important to detail the actual actions that need to be undertaken to achieve the objectives.

This step is also important as it directly links to the resources and capabilities of the club or NFP.

A mistake that can be made is that you create actions which are not achievable. They may be too unrealistic and this can often be the reason why strategic plans can be ineffective.  Hence, try to be both realistic and practical as each action is prepared.

For example, using the first point in the previous post which relates to increasing the income, there are a number of ways this could be addressed.

For example, these could include:

  • Identifying organisations that provide grants that could include the philanthropic organisations, local, State and the Commonwealth government.
  • Developing a recruitment campaign to increase memberships that is linked to a social media strategy.
  • Planning fundraising events that may include running a trivia night, arts and crafts stall every 3 months or an auction where donated goods from local businesses are sold.

Again, these are just some general examples but it highlights how actions can be linked to the key objectives.

Therefore, for each key objective break it down into actions that can be undertaken to address the intention of the objective such that it can be achieved.  In some cases it may be just one action or activity and in others it may require several actions or activities.  The important point is that you outline the specific steps that need to be undertaken and that they are accurately detailed.

The next post discusses how to establish timelines that need to be implemented to achieve the objectives.
