Google mobile friendly websiteEveryone is online these days, and not just from school or the office. Nor just from the internet cafe, or the library, or from home. Everyone is online everywhere! Mobile browsing has, in a few short years, become so completely commonplace you can be absolutely sure if your site is not mobile ready, you are missing out on views. It is even more so nowthat Google has adjusted how they rank sites appearing in search results, prioritising those that are ‘mobile friendly’.

Essentially, this means that if your organisation’s site is not optimised for mobile viewing, Google will shuffle you further down in searches related to your industry, and you will shortly begin to see fewer and fewer views. Given that most organisations estimate between 30% and 50% of their website traffic comes from mobile devices, this recent change could have a really big impact on the unprepared.

If you are not sure where your organisation sits, you can use Google’s own free tool, which will tell you if your site is properly configured to receive mobile traffic. By simply entering your web address in the search field, Google will let you know if you are ‘mobile friendly’ or not. If a site is not designed and built with mobile viewers in mind, common problems are that the content of the site may appear too small to read on a smaller screen, or the site pages might not fit the screen appropriately.

If it turns your organisation’s site is not ‘mobile friendly’, quick action is recommended. Look into a responsive retrofit to improve viewability, or if you are due for a website redesign, make sure to mention mobile readiness to the team undertaking the work.

As always, don’t be afraid of change. Your revamped site could attract more viewers than ever. From absolutely everywhere!
