accountability

In contrast to the previous post which discussed some legal and formal ways to improve the accountability and transparency of the organisation, there are a number of informal ways this can be achieved.

Depending on the nature of your organisation, some of these may be more suitable and practical to do than others.  The intention is to highlight some alternative ways this can be achieved.

  • Ensure the Vision, Mission and the Values of the organisation are publicised and complied with.
  • If you prepare a strategic plan make it available to the public.  This can be at an event or even the Annual General Meeting for your organisation.  It is also important to report against the progress and achievement of the key objectives contained in the plan.
  • Have a good communications process with the people associated with your organisation.  This may be by a regular newsletter or updates on your website or Facebook page.  Use this to provide regular updates in relation to activities or events associated with your organisation.
  • Linked to a good communication process could be undertaking a survey of your supporters to seek their direct input on a number of issues.
  • Arrange to meet with supporters and key stakeholders of the organisation so you can seek their views on issues.  In addition, this can be a good opportunity to discuss achievements as well as plans for the future.

The key to most of these points is that your organisation is seen to be actively addressing and improving the accountability and transparency of the organisation.
